This is Darby last bonfire night (in fact for about a week around bonfire night, and New Years Eve, and any other time there are fireworks in the air).
Darby is TERRIFIED of fireworks, back firing cars, gun fire, in face any big noises whatsoever....including thunder....and the doggy lovers amongst you will know dogs can hear a thunder storm approaching miles before us mere humans.....
From where we live, we can see beautiful fireworks for miles... we get an amazing show from right where we are in the garden. Jessie and I (as well as Mr. C) cannot wait to get in the garden, oohing and aahing at the rockets, fountains and booms (that’s me not Jess, she is generally running around like a mad thing barking her head off and loving it!!)
And where is Darby? Yep, under the coffee table that she really doesn’t fit under (or any other piece of furniture she can access)....I swear if she had an opposable thumb she would have a tin hat on!
It makes me really sad that Darby can’t share in our excitement. I would really love her to know that if she would just come out from under the table she would experience beautiful firework displays as well as pick up on our excitement and most importantly enjoy a lovely family experience all together.
If only I could explain to her that if she came out from under the coffee table, the experience would really be worth it...she would be perfectly safe because any form of danger is far away and she could just enjoy the good stuff. And if I could just let her know that if she only tried it once, she wouldn’t be quite so scared next time and eventually she would 100% trust being out with us and not needing the perceived safety of the coffee table. Because let’s face it, if a rocket is going to fall from the sky, we are all going to need more than a coffee table!
Of course I can’t speak doggy and no amount of reassurance, cajoling or persuading from me will convince her to try it. In fact I think the older she gets, the worse it gets...
Darby’s coffee table is the equivalent to your comfort zone. For as long as you don’t allow yourself to come out from under it, you are missing out. Missing out on experiences, opportunities and beautiful, free firework spectaculars.....nothing spectacular under a coffee table, let me tell you!!
So whilst it would be cruel for me to expect Darby to come out and face her unknowns ( she is a dog and a senior dog, as our American friends would call her), I challenge you to step out of yours....it is where the fireworks are and you deserve to be there.. Don’t know how? Let me help you.....click here to find out about getting ready to take 2017 by the horns!
In the mean time, have a great bonfire night, keep yourself and your loved ones safe, but make a commitment to yourself to do something that scares you just a little bit.....stretch your comfort zone and take a peep out from your proverbial coffee table ;)
Do get in touch if you have comments or if you or your pooch would like to guest blog.
In the meantime....be your brightest star xxxxxxxx
